Ladybugs: Friend or Foe?

Did you know that not all garden insects are pests? There are actually a handful of insects that are considered garden “beneficials” and help naturally control the pests in your garden. One of those beneficial insects is popularly known as the “Ladybug”, or more correctly called the Lady Beetle since it is a true beetle not a bug. Lady Beetles eat garden mites, whitefly, scales, mealybugs and other soft-bodied insects. However, they are best known for controlling the aphids in your garden.

Don’t let the Lady Beetle’s size confuse you. These tiny beetles are hearty eaters and consume large numbers of unwanted bugs in your garden when aphids are in short supply. Additionally, lady beetles feed on pollen. They are particularly drawn to plants that have umbrella shaped flowers or leaves; such as yarrow, cilantro, fennel, dill, etc.

If you do not have an abundant of lady beetles in your area it is best to purchase some from Mozlon’s. You will want to carefully choose when the release your lady beetles so they do not fly away. We suggest to keep them in the refrigerator for 8 hours to slow them down when they are released. Also, we have found it best to release them on a cool evening or at night. This will discourage them from flying away. We have found that watering your garden ahead of time also helps. That way when you are spreading them gently throughout your garden they will be able to easily find food and water.
